rebuilding a slave cylinder

I pulled out the clutch slave cylinder in my 84 190e. I cleaned it up with clean brake fluid as Haynes says to do, lubed it well. The piston seems real tight. Is this normal? When I pushed it down, it took a lot more pressure than the spring could give. Should I hone the cylinder? Could I blow out the master seals now? I've heard that you should rebuild the master when you do the slave. Is that why?

Thanks for any input, Mike

If the piston is tight, you will need to see to it. Hone the cylinder only enough to remove any pitting. Replace the seal or cup.

Overhaul or replacement of the m/c at the same time may or may not be necessary. If fluid is flushed regularly, it is highly likely that niether one will ever need any attention. Since the slave DOES need attention, then the m/c has operated with the same dirty fluid, so it might. It would certainly be a good time to check it.

Good luck,
