Greetings,
I just rebuilt the head on our '88 190E. I noticed this before the rebuild but thought the rebuild may fix it. When driving around with the windows or roof open the smell of gasoline is really apparent. Windows up no problem. I don't think it's a leaky tank. The head, pistons, and valves had all kinds of carbon built up on them. I suppose that it is runnig too rich. Is there any way to adjust this myself. Are there any other things I should check before taking it to a shop? All the manuals say that it has to go to an MB tech to have the mixture adjusted. Why is this? Thanks Kyle

Kyle,
The history and symptoms you've given would lead me first to the injectors. If you've removed the injectors from the head and re-installed without changing the seals, I'd almost guarantee that's your source. Next would be for the obvious fuel line leaks. After verifying these aren't your problems, then I'd start checking engine management systems and O2 sensor ops. |

I had this problem with my old '85. Turned out to be an internally leaking electromagnetic enrichment device (the black thing on the back of the fuel distributor). Eventually it leaked externally, which is when I caught it for what it was. I couldn't seal the darned thing when it did this. It was just cracked invisibly through the bakelite body.

Fuel Smell
Ditto the Benzfan. The EHA seems to be a common problem on the CIS-E cars and the build-up on your valves I would guess to be from oil fouling on a vehicle with that many miles. Good Luck. Brian

Actually This problem is with a Vacuum line right next to the fuse box, with the car running you will hear a hiss sound, coming from the valve where the vacuum lines run in to. The vavle is yellow if i remember right. All you need to do is make sure the small vacuum line is not leaking. And that will fix your problem.
