Question Is this the EHA???

Hi all,

In the attached pic, what's the name and part number of the black rectangular object on the lower right hand corner (attached to the distributor)?

Is this the EHA (Electro Hydraulic Actuator Frequency Valve, part number 2437020007)?

Would anyone happen to know the correct part number for the seal so I can stop the fuel weeping? The car doesn't have a hard time starting.

TIA

Yes, that is the EHA. I just replaced my seals (you will need two) and it stopped ;eaking. I hear though that the unit itself may leak; mine hasn't yet. Part # 012 997 97 48

Actually, the side black object is the EHA and has one connector with two wires, black and brown.

698.- saved

Hi all,

I'd like to share my bad experience with MB dealership and great experience with this forum.

My car (W124 300CE, 1989) has been recalled for changing the throttle cable, without charge of course. After the job the MB service man told me that the EHA had been leaking and they needed another hour to change it; the cost would be 517.28 for part and 698.- including labor and tax. Since I was not prepared for another hour of service I said I had to go to the office because of a meeting and I would bring the car back another time; The service man then told me that because everything was opened now they could do it in 30 minutes; Still I did not have the 30 minute time; again they said that the job can be done in 15 min since they had not re-assembled the parts which normally make the EHA inaccessible. At that point I wondered why would they charge over $140 in labor for a 15-minute job, so I insisted on coming back other time.

At home I reseached first on ebay and found several offers for the EHA, new, between 179.- - 219.- . Then I came across a thread on this forum about adjusting the EHA and somebody mentioned that after removing the air cleaner box, the EHA can be removed by loosening 2 (two) screws; in another follow-up some MB "Samaritan" said that the seal tends to be leaking. I decided to give it a try, ordered the seal (1.20 each) and voila` my EHA is not leaking any more.

What I resented the MB dealership that they have not even tried to look at the seal. I know that MB service is not there to save us money but charging 517.- for some part which others sell for 179.- is outrageous enough and then charging 140.- for a maximum 5-min work (even if the air cleaner had not been already out, they would have done it in 10 min; because it took me 20 minutes with no experience and no good tools) would be first-class rip-off.

I appreciated this forum and its knowledgeable members very much.

Question

Thanks for the info guys. I'll see about the seals. My story continues below.

My EHA valve looked like the one attached. My indie shop replaced it with a new, but slightly different looking one. It had the same part number but the pointed tip on the upper left corner of the EHA pictured wasn't the same.

Sure enough it fit but it took a while to start the engine (as the fuel pressure regulator was also replaced as it leaked profusely).

New Symptoms

1. Previously, it always started on the first click. Now, I need several attempts when warm. I haven't tried it cold yet. I'll find out in a few hours.

2. When at a stand still on neutral with the engine warm and the aux fans on, I can feel a slight rev come on and off at regular intervals. I don't see any revs being reflected in the tach but I can feel them.

I'm going back to the indie shop and have them fit the old one in just to see if the old one exhibits hard starting as well (I'm pretty sure it'll return to the 1-click start). If this is the case, I'll have them replace the EHA they sold me.

I'll try to post pics of the new EHA and the old one. Stupid me forgot to do this before the damn thing was installed. The pic attached is something I got off the net. Maybe I should've just gone for the seals first.

I read that the "mixture" should be adjusted with a new EHA. I doubt if the indie shop did. How is this done exactly?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

There is a screw on the EHA. If you unscrew it there is a hex screw beneath which can be adjusted.
This adjustment is sometimes usefull for this sort of trouble but probably should be the last thing you try:
Adjusting an EHA. It IS possible!!
The above thread has lots of info about peoples EHA adjustment experiences... also search 'EHA' and you will find a lot more reading.
The problem is you are adjusting something which is not easily measured...
the EHA adjustment might affect the pressure in your fuel distributor so you would need to measure upper and lower chamber pressure during the adjustment to really know what was going on...
Idealy you should adjust what you can measure first. This link has some info on checking duty cycle, as do the links in my signature...
Rough idle/hesitation after EHA adjustment (W124 300E)
What kind of engine do you have?
