E420 Fading digital read-out/instrument cluster

The digital read-out is fading out starting form the clock side along the bottom row..it happens after about a half our and going on 'til it is invisible (clock) If i stop the engine for a few minutes it regains its brightness a bit and it fades out after..Any ideas where to look for the problam...
