Windshield Replacement Quotes

W124, nasty crack and I need to replace the windshield.

The local indy quoted me 400 for aftermarket glass plus install. The shop the dealer uses will do 500 for aftermarket glass & install. If I want the genuine thing its another 150.

What is typical for a windshield replacement on a W124? Am I getting high or low estimates?

I had an aftermarket (Pilkington) glass put in my 88 W124 for $149 and the Owner of the shop said the Mercedes glass would have been just under double that. I had them put in a mercedes glass on my C230 and the cost was $239 about $80 more than the aftermarket. The shop was a Speedy Auto glass franchise.

That's really really high. I had two different W124's done in my driveway for $250each parts + labor. The last time was about 3 years ago.

Two qualifiers. First I am in NE Tennessee and things may be cheaper here. On the other hand I would think that competition would be greater in a larger area.

I would make some more calls.

Having it done properly the first time is be important, when choosing who to do it. You could call the Mercedes dealer and ask them which shop THEY use for these jobs.

Sekurit, Sigla or PPG glass I think would be the best to use.

I hope your sunroof drains are clean, so you know from the start there will be no leakage into the interior.

I've replaced them in 3 of my cars at Harmon Auto Glass. They were between 200 and 300 bucks. The cheapest being the Sd and the most expensive the 163. The 202 was somewhere around 240.

During research I found a thread regarding removing the windshield wiper mechanism when installing windshield.

You might want to read it here
124 Windshield Replacement Warning!

Also good time to clean & relube the mechanism. Removing the entire wiper mechanism is an easy DIYer. Most time spent is removing all the plastic surrounds.

I had one of those roving glass places replace mine in the 300ce. They charged about 200 dollars... they were done in about 20 minutes.

Well I suppose thats decided! I won't be using either of those places. But then even the Safelite shop gave me a 400 dollar figure. I did though find one more shop last night that was only 275, they also had proper OEM glass manufacturers listed on their website.

Do you have any diagrams floating around for those? I've wanted to go through and clean all the drains and this seems like a good time to take care of it.

$400ish is not a bad price

I have a relative in the glass business. I suggest PPG or one of their related companies as being the best, according to her. You aren't going to find Sekurit unless you want to pay $$ and get it direct from Germany, but she puts PPG (and there is a subsidiary whose name I cannot recall, sorry) in all their MBs with great success.

List on mine was somewhere north of $400, but my discount gave me a new screen for $220 installed (lucky me)
