I am shortly going to be faced with replacing my clutch and just wanted to inquire about the different types of clutches available and personal reactions to them. I know there is the standard replacement clutch - but I have never really been a big fan of light clutches, like the one this car came with. I was looking possibly at a sport clutch, SACHS & CENTERFORCE - are some of the ones I have seen but then again I do not want to go over the deep end with a really heavy clutch. I just want something a bit heavier than the stock.

Also what are the big trade offs with the different clutch types?

Price:
- I have priced the stock replacement around $400.00 for parts only. If possible some prices on the alternative would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you ahead of time

Pete

Pete,
I just looked on FastLane here on this site and the price for the stock replacement parts is about: $337.67 which includes the clutch disk, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and pilot bearing.

One place that sells 'sport' clutches for our cars is Bekkers Import (www.bekkers.com) but expect to pay quite a bit more.

I was wondering how many miles you got out of your clutch and how hard it is to change it.

Jim,
I've had my 16V about 4.5 years. The previous owner replaced the clutch at around 100,000 miles, the car has 140,000 now so I don't expect to have to change it for a while.

The car has 60,000 miles on it, and the clutch could made to last another 2000 maybe

Just with the age of the car, the clutch being original, and the feel of it going in and out - one minute the presure feels fine the next you are basically at the floor before any resistance is felt

The mechanic said the presure plate or the springs in the clutch are probably giving in to the heat and all

I just think I better replace it before I am in the middle of no where and one of the fingers breaks off
