I have finished a valve body "rebuild" (which really only amounts to spring replacement, freedom of movement checks, and burr removal). Simple procedure - but frustrating due to resource limitations. MB techs no longer even open a valve body - they just replace, at +$2K. I learned this after losing several small bearings held inside the body and discovering that few techs at the dealer even knew they existed (no EPC#). My problem is that without the purchase of a Star diagnostic unit, there appears to be no way to clear the Transmission error codes (ECU flashing, or scanner clearing does not truly clear the ETC). I have a friend who works at a shop, and he has cleared the system several times for me with Star - but the adaptation procedures, coupled will all the updates I did in this process (conductor plate, plug o-rings, screens beneath solenoids, magnet, cleaning of all harness plugs, numerous other adjustments) will likely require several more resets before I get it right. I have to believe there is a way to reflash the ETC/TCU (I can do a manual re-readapt). I have read references to "pulling relevant fuses (?) " while the ignition is on, and to touching the pos/neg batt connectors (with the battery removed). Tried the cable connect - but no luck, and I am reluctant to pull fuses from a live system. I have a P0730 (implausible gear ratio), that shows up as pending upon every restart (see post:
Diagnose/Repair P0730 on 722.6 - Mystery Fault ) - even before gear is engaged. I have done the usual multimeter pinout tests on the range rec. sensor, and on the ETC, with no errors. Does anyone know A diy method to truly reset the ETC. I have done all the typical procedures - scan tool clear, batt disconnect, tps reset (ignition key/accel pedal reset), and the HVAC head unit code clear methods). MB techs claim it can't be done - which only makes me want to try harder.
