I will suggest that if you have a helper, try being clost to, or even lightly holding the suspect shock or other parts you suspect are the source as the helper shuts off the engine. Take your time, be careful around moving belts and pulleys and you may find the source.

I find it's impossible to locate the source of noises from inside, so I just turn up the radio until I can get under the hood.
