No check engine light

Hi all,
Is there any easy way to check my CEL (check engine light)

I thought it was a burned out bulb, but changed the bulb with a known good one and even plugged the old bulb in another socket and it worked. It won't come on during the self test and I don't like that.
any suggestions besides the dealership?

Maybe a fuse problem? Is the car running OK?

A buddy of mine...

once did some computer work on his Toyota Supra that made the CEL light come on. Nothing wrong with the car/engine but the light could not be avoided because the new computer was not right for his car. SO....he cut the wire so that the bulb would not light up. Are you the original owner? Just an idea...

Car doesn't miss a lick. No I'm not the original owner. Every other light works, all options work, cruise works, alarm works.

Failed the CA Smog test last week at a test-only station - due to an inop Check Engine Light. Annoyed that I didn't spot that one before the test

Have to say I was concerned that if the bulb was faulty (which it was) that once a new bulb was put in - the light would stay on due to another CEL related issue. Thank goodness that was not the case. So my CEL issue was cured by replacing the 1.2w instrument bulb. Phew
