John Lor

1987 300-e
I have been troubleshooting a "cold start" problem with my '87 300-e. The symtoms are 1. Takes multiple try's to start the engine.
2. Once the engine starts it runs as if it choking. it chugg's and if I press the accelerator the engine will quit. I have to let it chugg along for about a minute or two and only then can I rev the engine and drive.
I was told that this problem could be cured by replacing the "cpld start valve".
The dealer wanted 400.00 so I shoped around and found a "BORG/WARNER" cold start valve for 200.00. So I replaced it and I am having the same problem. Could the new valve be defective? Do I have to purchase one from the dealer? Can anyone give me some advise on what to try next?
Thanks, John Lor

IF you ve replaced the cold start valve take a look at some of the electronics.

Check your ovp and the warning harness to make sure thats good. It could be a faulty new cold start valve. Only way to find that out is take a know good one and put in there.

John Lor 300-E cold start problem Canton GA

Thanks for the Input Oracle. I have fuel pressure going to the cold start valve. The wire harness appeares to be sound. I am not electricaly inclined so my next step will be to find a machanic with electric and fuel injector experiiance to trouble shoot the system.

I had a similar problem with a 190E 2.6 and it was hard to start and I bought a new ovp and it greatly improved the starting.
I can send you documents on how to test the electrical system on your car. Only takes a multimeter for the most of the tests. Send me your vin # and email addy so I can send it you.

I would say it's a common problem when you have a defective fuel accumulator.

If you installed a non-genuine cold start valve, I would strongly recommend that you replace it with the old original one.
