Just a few more repairs and then goodbye

I went to visit a Honda Accord Coupe. The one I found was Polished Metal Metallic with a black leather interior. It was beautiful!!! There is no comparison to our W124 cars!!! These new cars are absolutely awesome!!! Don’t kid yourself into thinking your car is as nice as these new vehicles!!! It costs half what our cars cost when new and the thing has 18” wheels, air bags everywhere, bluetooth so your cell phone is totally handsfree, it is faster than our car, it goes like crazy in the snow, it has a great stereo that connects to your iPod, it gets 30 mpg, it doesn’t need a tune-up for 100K, the interior just looks and feels at least as nice or nicer than my old car, it has Navi, it has rear camera if you want it, ….

It wasn’t hunkered down like the BMW Coupe, but it costs 50% less, it is just as fast or faster, it has front wheel drive, which might not sound as cool, but it will sure go like crazy in the snow. Did I mention that it costs 50% LESS than the BMW!!! I didn’t even mention the C-Class because it sucks to own a Benz!!!

I’m afraid my old car has seen its day. Honestly, I think the new Honda blows me away!!! I suppose my car really was pretty good, considering it does measure up at least close to a car that is 13 years newer, but when you think that the new Honda is half the price of my car when new, you just have realize that times have changed!!!

I am just trying to make it to 2010 without fixing my piece of sh?*. The new cars are just much nicer than our W124 cars, even if they do cost less to own and operate and even if they do get much better mileage and are faster and much safer. My car is cool except it sucks!!!

I stopped reading when I saw "it's front wheel drive."

Nothing more was necessary.

Consider this... the star on your hood can never be replaced by the 'H' on their trunk - Benz' lead while Hondas follow. There simply is no comparison. Dude, your Benz is like a fine piece of machinery that, yes, requires periodic tuning and maintenance. But like a vintage Stradivarius, it needs care and nurturing and then sounds so sweet. Do heads turn when a new chic Honda passes... or do people whisper in low jealous tones as the classic lines of your Benz pass by (fresh from the detailers, of course)? Awake from the drunken stupor of modern flotsam and delight yourself in the knowledge that you own a Mercedes-Benz. You are part of a distinguished and proud family of motorcar enthusiasts, not flashes in today's oil pan. Resist the temptation!
Cheers,
Jeff

Gotta side with ksing44's opinion...

...if your W124 is being relied on for daily use, it's hard to justify the expense of keeping it on the road when there are far more suitable offerings these days to replace a nearly 20-year old car.

I worship the MB marque as well, but when it comes down to nuts and bolts, choosing a fresh new Honda for the daily commute takes one worry off one's shoulder...especially when I can pretty much expect some light to come on the dash every other month or so...

Exactly. I'm probably buying a Rabbit just for the fact that it's $16k LOADED with ASR, EDL, ESP, Sirius, and something like 4 airbags. I drove one and was blown away. A decade old car just can't keep up with technology; the Rabbit has more than my C for sure. I will keep the C as a 5-10k a year car, because it's in great shape, but it's unrealistic to be driving a decade-old car 20-30k a year at 165k.....

Although I looked at the Accord coupe and I love the 2007 BMW coupe, I am really trying to make it in my car until the VW diesel Rabbits show up in the US again. I like the idea of 50 mpg and I like the idea of burning WVO, so hopefully I will like the diesels when they arrive. I wish they would make a GTI diesel. I would like all the handling stuff and the nicer interior, but with slower economical diesel motor.

Has anyone thought about why they have so many air bags in these new cars. Sure it is to protect life and limb but why not just build a car that is safe with out them (like my 84 SEL). If in a crash a car is completly crushed, all the air bags in the world are not going to help. I'll just keep my OLD MBs thanks.

Honda builds a GREAT utilitarian car. If you just need t get from A to B, a Honda is the perfect choice. They will also cost very little to maintain and the do get good gas mileage.

But, some of here bought Mercedes because we are in love with the marque, and always have been. When I was a kid, my favorite matchbox car was my blue 300E--keep in mind I had many to choose from.

In short, for me, Mercedes has "soul." And this is why I'm willing to spend thousands in repairs and upkeep. I also feel that the Chrysler Mercedes for the most part lack a lot of the "soul."

I can respect your choice--just try to see it that your E320 goes to a good home

I'm sure this is all true.

That is why I do not allow myself to drive such cars. If I did, I might not be so happy with my old 124, which I still love...due to my self-imposed ignorance, no doubt.

I think the Honda's are the best engineered car on the planet. Good choice.

Matter of Taste/Choice??

Having owned 2 Hondas in the past, I know they are great cars bottom line!!! But at the end it comes down to a matter of taste. For me nothing rides like the older benzs!!!! Nothing like driving down the highway with that own the road feeling!! Or like cruising down the road straight from the detail shop and seeing the heads turn. A well Maintained benz is nothing but a pleasure to drive. I am going to drive old benzes for a very long time to come!!! Honda's are great cars and if that is what you want drive!! By all means drive it!!! And if your W124 is in halfway decent condition, hopefully the right person buys it and enjoys it!!
