I have '94 C280 - just recently purchased. BMW's for years before. Here's the topic: What can I expect for rpm's at 70 mph? My tach shows just over 3100 rpm!? Maybe I'm used to having a 5-speed manual but this rpm seems excessive...

If this is the norm for a '94 C280, what can I expect for 100mph? 120 mph? I keep wanting to reach down and upshift at 70 mph!

Somebody tell me this is normal...Thanks.

Ok, its normal. No, really it is normal. My 300E will tach around 3300 RPM @ 75 mph.
Oh, and there is plenty of ass left in the engine @ 120mph.

Great - I'll rest a little easier. Until I get new rubber and an open W. Texas road it won't see 120 mph...Not that I'd drive irresponsibly, ever, never.

Thanks again!

Yup, your car is all good. You will hit about 4,000 @ 100. Then if you hit 5,000 you're pushing 120+, and it could run all day long at this speed!
It sometime annoys me too... but atleast you don't always have to downshift when passing on the hwy!

Don't worry about revving the M104 inline six. That puppy will cruise all day and night at 100+mph.

Get some V-Rated tires, and find some deserted road prior to running her at top speed.

JS.
Thanks to all who have responded - Really appreciated.

lookup the rpm at which your M104 engine develops max power. My guess is that your 4th gear ratio is designed such that the car reaches max speed at that rpm.

Max horsepower for the M104 2.8 liter is 195 @ 5500 RPM, though redline is 6400, I believe.

They actually changed in the 94/95 E320 series.
The 104.992/217hp went to both 1st gear start and 2:65 rear gearing.
