Can anybody direct me to where the auxiliary fan fuse is located in a 500E. I checked the fuse box and all it indicates is that it is outside the fusebox. Thanks.

Are you sure you mean aux fan, or ACC blower fan? Blower is outside fuse box in front of and near the fender in a small black casing. Aux fan should be in the fuse box, unless MBZ has changed the location for the 500E.

On my E320 the fuse you are looking for (if you are referring to the fans in front of the radiator) are accessed by removing the six screws of the plastic piece where you got the cover from that you photographed and taking that plastic piece off. The fuse is on top of a relay back in there. Search the posts. This fuse can be upgraded (higher amperage) without any problems to the wiring system.

Same info applies. They have just added more stuff to that circuit. Small rectangular holder in front of main box, close to fender. Pop the cover off and you will find a strip fuze in there.

Under cover behind fuse box. Just below winshield.
Remove screws to gain access. This box contains the relays. The fuse is on top of the high speed fan relay.

I believe I know what you guys mean.

It's the black box on the upper right hand corner of the picture, right?



Was wondering what was in that box...the MB CD doesn't state where it is as well...

I just wanted to check if all the fuses are okay and replace those that need replacing...never hurts.

That's it.
As Jim said, lift fuse ID cover off and remove the 6 phillps screws.
Benz recommended a larger fuse . It is in the archieves.

I'll do a search again. Couldn't seem to find it last night. Too many posts pop up and I just read the ones with titles that seemed indicate it had the information I was looking for. (And it wouldn't allow me to type the whole phrase "auxiliary fan fuse location"!)

Does the fuse upgrade apply to all W124s or just the 500s? I'm not sure if all W124s had 2 auxiliary fans as well...

As I said before. Look at the picture, between the shock tower and the alarm switch for the hood. The little black rectangle holds the strip fuse you are looking for. It is not in the relay nest behind the main fuse box.

I'll be interested to find out the definitive answer, since I believe it applies to the 400E too. I have a separate 15amp fuse on a little outrigger box next to the main fuse box, but this one does NOT control the aux fans, or if it does, it is not the ONLY fuse for them. Three summers ago while in Kansas City, my aux fans refused to work. All fuses in the main box were OK. The 15 amp separate fuse had blown, but replacing it didn't fix the problem. Took the car to the local dealer (Aristocrat Motors) and the tech took off the air cleaner and a few other things on the top of the engine to get to another fuse (as near as I could tell from a distance, watching from the waiting room). Has worked fine ever since. They didn't even charge me for the fix, but I sure wish I was smart enough to ask him WHERE in heck that fuse is, since nobody I've talked with since seemed to know what I was talking about.

I am absolutely sure that in my car, at least, there is a hidden fuse SOMEWHERE on the top of the engine but distant from the fuse box.

The location that Jeff is referring to is the Fuse Strip for the A/C blower motor.

Not sure that that controls the Aux Fans unless it serves a dual purpose.

Incidentally, this fuse strip is the first thing you should look at if you start having intermittent blower motor operation.

This is what I'll do...

I'll remove the fuses (the one the Jeff mentioned as well as those located behind the main fuse box) and once the aux fan stops operating, that should indicate which one is the real aux fan fuse.

I sure do hope that after removing *one* of the fuses that the aux fan does stop working...

I'll post the results within 24 hrs.

Although I was not able to get to the box behind the main fuse box as yet, I can confirm that the strip fuse you mention (inside the small rectangular box beside the alarm plunger switch for the hood)is *NOT* the fuse for the auxiliary fans. I removed the wires connected to the strip fuse, removed the fuse and still the auxiliary fans come on.

I'll check the box behind the main fuse box a little later on...

I wish this is in the manual or CD somewhere...

Very late update to this thread, but for the twin auxiliary fans in front of the condenser/radiator:

The 1992-1993 400E / 500E have a single, 30A strip fuse in a narrow black plastic holder, typically located behind the brake booster area. This is different than the other 30A strip fuse located at the driver strut mount for the HVAC blower. I believe all 124's have this as of 1988 USA model year (early cars had a 25A ceramic fuse that was undersized for the application, there was a TSB to replace it with the external 30A fuse).

The 1994-95 models (E300, E320, E420, E500) DO NOT have the external 30A strip fuse for the auxiliary cooling fans. The facelift cars changed from a single double-size unfused relay, to using TWO separate fused cube relays. The low speed relay is 15A (with allowance to increase fuse size to 20A if needed), the high speed relay is 30A and should not have a larger fuse installed.

Someone else with a 400E just reported on the 500E board forum that they also have a second, external 15A blade fuse added to the low-speed fan circuit also, as mentioned by Steve in post #11 above. Details here.
