1989 420 SEL valve cover gaskets

Is there a preferred method of installing valve cover gaskets to keep them from leaking? I've done mine a couple times and found for sure that they cant be adjusted after they've been run, they have to be replaced. Seems to fix the problem but then they leak again. It's never the same place, either.
