190 SL clutch replacement

Am pursuing clutch replacement on this 190SL. Initial inspection looks like pulling the motor is the way to go. There doesn't seem to be enough room to shift the tranny back for removal with the driveline encapsolated in the chassis the way it is. Can you offer the correct procedure in very basic terms for clutch removal??

You might want to post this in the Vintage section. The answer is no, you don't need to pull the engine. If you are going to pull it anyway, it certainly would be easier to do... Some of the other guys might be able to help you out, I had mine done right after I got the car - now I'd probably do it myself. It might take a few days to get an answer, as last weekend was the International 190SL Convention in Leadville CO, and many folks haven't arrived home yet! You might also try posting a note on the 190SL formum (www.190slgroup.com).

I'm not familiar with this chassis, but I recently pulled the engine in my 240D to change the clutch. Most people advised against this approach, but later I got a few messages saying that they agreed with my approach. I had pulled the engine on these simple cars before and it is just less frustrating than pulling the transmission.

Given the fact that the 190 is a relatively early car, without all the wiring harnesses and many other things involved with later cars, I wouldn't be surprised if pulling the engine were fairly easy as long as you have the equipment you need. I have a walking beam down the middle of my shop with a chain hoist and an engine tilter bar hanging on the chain hoist.

It was my preference and worked well for me.

190 SL Clutch

Finished the job today. Pulled the tranny. The driveline pushed back just fine after removing the zirk for the spline so the lube could push out. I considered pulling the motor because there are far few hookups on these early cars.

What I was looking for was an indication from someone who knows as to which is the factory procedure. I feel sure it is pulling the tranny now that I've done it.
