300e Problem installing kickdown cable.

1989 300E W124 278K km's
Removed the old kickdown cable (control pressure cable) and can't get the new one back in place.
I'm attempting to do this with the transmission still in the car.
Do I have to lower the transmission to get this cable back into place or can it be done with transmission fitted and attached.
I removed the old cable by squeezing the plastic tab and rotating the fitting anti clockwise.
Tried a reverse of this procedure to install the new cable, but it just refuses to go down deep enough into the hole to enable the plastic tab to lock into position to hold it.
There really is not too much room to get your hands on this fitting.
What is the secret to this...?
Anyone else had this problem, and if so, how did you fix it.
Appreciate any input.
