1986 300E - Won't Start
Actually I believe the car starts, but immediately shuts down. When I crank the key to turn on the car, I hear the starter crank and the engine does turn on. In fact it stays on long enough to rev the engine with the gas peddle for about 1 second before turning itself off.
The strange part, the O2 and SRS light stay on which I've never seen before. Also, the tachometer and speedometer don't move at all even while I'm revving the engine. The far left cluster with the fuel level and oil pressure do seem to work just fine. A strong hail and rain storm just hit this afternoon and could have gotten something wet. I got a ride home from work, but won't be able to try the ignitiion again until tomorrow. Maybe it just drys out and everything works fine, but if I should be addressing something now I'd like to get some parts ordered. Let me know if anyone has a clue whats going on. I'm thinking either something got wet or a vacuum hose disconnected. I just drove it hours before the problem with no signs of anything abnormal. Thanks as always for your help -Joe

two things I can think of would be to check the over voltage protection relay and the fuel computer. Both are behind the battery and should be covered by a plastic panel, if the panel isn't there that could explain how they got wet. If the ovpr looks ok try jiggling the fuel computer around, you may notice an instant difference.

I'll try that. Thanks for the advice. I won't be able to try until tomorrow morning, so if there are any other ideas floating around, let me know tonight and we'll see what happens. Thanks again-Joe
