I have a 1998 S320, I just bought the car and i figured the batteries in the remote were dead, so i changed them.
when i press the button on the remote, the red light comes on in the remote, but nothing happens with the doors, no lights flash by the lock or trunk. how do i program it? I did not get the wners manual with the car any help I would appreciate thanks |

That was taken from a 1998 S320 owners manual.

Try pointing the remote at one of the other lock receivers. It's possibly the one you're testing with is bad. Stevebfl's instructions are accurate, because I have used that exact procedure to re-sync the key on my '97 S320.
If it still doesn't work, then I'd say you either have a problem with the transmitter diode in the key or there's a problem with the car's security module. You can test the key by aiming it a digital camera and pressing the button. The CCD in modern digital cameras can detect the infra-red beam emitted by the key. So if you watch the viewfinder while pressing the button, you will see the LED flicker with a kind of white/purple color. I'm not sure about how to test the car's module though. I imagine the Star Diagnostic system would probably have a way to do that.

You have to turn the ignition on after you insert the key. Don't start the car, just turn it on.

Sorry for the dumb statement, but I had to make sure.
![]() Were you able to positively determine that your key fob is transmitting? Did you try pointing the key at a different receiver?

Which red light? The one on the key fob or the one on the car? If it's the key fob, it's just the battery check indicator.
Did you do the digital camera test I mentioned a couple of posts ago? Did you try and aim the key fob at a different receiver (like the trunk) and follow the instructions that stevebfl posted?

yes i did try it on the trunk, when i mention the red light blinks, i mean the remote.
when i point it on the car, the lights ( green ) on the door handle, does not light anywhere on the car, trunk or doors. I tried both ways using the keylock and the ignition. and i only have the one key fob, i am not sure how to do the thng with the digital camera. |

You will need a camera that uses a LCD display as a view finder.
Point your key at the lens of a digital camera, just like you would if you were going to unlock the car. Press and hold the button on the remote while you look at the camera's viewfinder. You should see a somewhat faint, continuous flickering /flashing light coming out of the red lens on the key while you hold the button down. The light will be white/purple in color. This will be a different light than the battery check indicator. If you see this light, it means your key is working. The camera's CCD image detector can "see" the infrared light emitted by the key fob and will display it as a white/purple color on the camera's display.
