Arm rest upgrade

I have a 89 300E with the solid padded armrest and wanted to update to the one with the storage area. Upon removal of old unit, it mounts with two bolts sticking out of the seat frame and a simple two nuts to unbolt. The newer (94?) with the storage has a center shaft protruding over an inch into the seat frame when the original is flat.

What is recommended to make this work? Should I disassemble the two units to swap parts? I took the eight screws off, but it only takes out the storage area and not to the position locking mechanism.

Thanks.

Arm rest locking mech. is behind the large push button on the arm rest. Button is held in by plastic clips moulded into the button. then you can get to the nuts inside. At least that's how the 126's I've worked on come apart.

Did you happen to look at the inside of the seat frame and see IF there is a large hole in the center of the bolt pattern?? If so just open a hole in the leather and bolt it up as is, use one screw for a lock pin. (??)
