Steering noise

I feel much more knowledgeable since I joined the forum. However, this noise problem I have it is overwhelming.
I will give you all background - maybe is something there I don't get.
In Dec 99 went to the dealer (car in warranty - 24k) because steering noise. Dealer did road test and said that R&L lower dash + repositioned boot.
In Sep 00 again steering noise (37k). Dealer found steering stops dry and dirty - clean + lube area.
May 2001 - again noise (49k). Dealer found bad power steering assembly. Replaced pump.
Aug 2001 - again noise (54k). Dealer said this time is the rack + pinion (they think - they are not 100% sure).

Did any of you experienced such array of issues with the steering on E-Class (mine is 1999MY)?

your problem occured during the warranty period,
they should deal with it until it is resolved.

Finally something positive happened. MB USA approved so the dealer fixed the car.
The invoice was covered by MB goodwill and it shows that 5 parts were replaced :
210-460-25-00 Steering Box (FastLane does not have this part)
and 4 parts 913023-010002 which have no description.

The invoiced also stated that an alignment has been performed as well.

Could somebody help me understand in plain English what the dealer did to the car?

Pat

I too have all kinds of problems which make me believe deales are not willing to replace any parts unless they fail to work. Mercedes are now worse than BMWS and I am not buying any european cars anymore.

From one Pat to another, That part number is for the Steering rack & pinion. The other number is the rack mounting bolts.
Sounds like they did what they should have done on your first complaint!!

I did have the same problem with the steering noise. It was a squeak noise coming from the steering column. At the beginning, the noise would go away after the car had warmed up. As the problem progressed, the noise got louder even the car had warmed up.

I went to the dealer. I was trying to play "DUMB" and said the noise was coming from the air bag. The service advisor immediately knew it was the steering boot problem. The technican put some lubrication and the problem was gone.

Since you have this same occuring problem, I would talk to MBUSA to get goodwill warranty. I am not sure if MB has service bulletin on this. But by the way the service advisor knew what the problem was without having me to further explain the situation. I guess the problem is frequent enought to issue the bulletin.

Good Luck
