how's the condition of your wiring harness?

I know my wiring harness is an original. I see some on Ebay but how can you know if they are not in the same condition that I currently have???

Arthur,

Could this be caused by wires shorting between the wire harness and the Mass Air Flow sensor. This all started when I was replacing my resistor for my blower motor. The car ran great before this.

Well, if one disturbes the hardess [ that is not a typo, I call them HARDNESS from now on ...] at all in doing any repairs in that chassis, it is a good probable...I hate to even change pliugs on one that has a suspect original hard-ness..they don't start shorting until they are disturbed...
Real deal is to cut it open and look...you will know for sure once you get the wrapping open...it is not a pretty site.
I would go into pins 8 and 14 for codes too....

Your blower uses a regulator , not a Resistor...but I know what you meant..just for info..

Arthur,

when driving my e320, it still surges, but as I go faster the surges get smaller. at 60 MPH you can still feel minut rapid surges. When I slow down, I have to throttle it down so the system does not over gas, causing me to shut the car off because the car goes into a fit. My gas mileage has plummetted.
I will go out and get the codes off of it in a little bit, but I know the last time I cleared out all the code and let it sit, I got code 5 off of pin 8. This is when I did it at idle.

From Pin 8
4,5,9,13,21 and 23

From Pin 14
11

when i cleared out all the faults and let it Idle the only one that came back was from pin 14 #11


"car goes into a fit" I guess it would seem like it is getting too much gas and without restarting the car acts like it is flooding or not getting enough gas. Car is putting a lot of smoke out during this time. and when I am sitting idle.

You have mutible problems, but I would start with coil misfires and MAF sensor cleaning.

The plug connectors ever been changed under the coils?
Are you running Plats?
Is the 1/4 slack at the cable ?

OK

Check cable adjustment and lube the cable...they stick all the time.

The coil connectors are suspect b/c they are infamous for misfire on waste spark ignition systems. Cheap insurrance.
You can aslo swap coils around and see if the codes follow the coil. While you are there, pull a plug and see what is in there ...the best for HFM/SFI 104s are Bosch F8DC4 or NGK replacements. NO PLATS !!!!

After you check that out, and do the connectors ,etc.... then here is the important part.
You have some codes that show fuel trims way out and the ECU is trying to compenstate for the condition.
If you clear the codes on pin 8 , you will get a single flash...once you get that, wait 2 secs, hold the button down 6-7 secs, release ..turn key OFF
for 50 secs , On for 10 , and then start car..that clears the Memory settings of the module back to a Normal Base line...if the repairs you made are corrective , you will be all set. The car will do this memory clear after several run cycles , but in the meantime , the module can still bring on a code b/c the memory has not yet attained mean...you get it to Mean right away by clearing the memory and the cardoes not have to do the drive cycles...just a tech trick........
Failure to bring the memory back just allows the module to keep bringing up the wrong limits until it corrects itself.
Don't CONFUSE Memory clear with CODE clear...they are entirely different...one is a fault detection storage system and the other is actual
module working parameter and engine adaptations.

I also notice you are looking at codes w/engine running..why????

Cable is checked. Have 1/4" slack and looks good.




after clearing the codes and not the memory I let it Idle for a few minutes then then I turned it off and checked the codes again. I sorry I didn't state I turned off the car.

By what you are saying, if all has been done that you said and I didn't clear the memory all this time, the problem could have stayed with the car till I wiped out the memory. Even if I unhooked the battery??

Arthur,

You mean I might have fixed it long ago when I replugged the vacuum lines back in but since I didn't erase memory it could still be causing problems. Why doesn't it reset and test every so often?

Before I go home I will do the memory clear, to see if it works.

I almost feel that most of the codes that I see are by products of over rev (surging problem) problem.

The car will self correct.[ readapt]
The car has the ability to change its working specs for engine management according to how the car runs...it tries to keep the car in perfect tune if something is a little out of wack and can also change settings according to enginer wear , driving style, etc. That's what makes these so cool.
If a car is running with a slow sensor or a dripping injector ,or whatever- etc, it corrects the management...it does not correct the part. It does not correct the fault, It works around the failing or weakened part..it ADAPTS to that condition... and if the condition is too far out or the part is too worn, it gets to its LIMITATIONS and CAN NOT CORRECT anymore. So, that's where you come to the rescue ...you change some parts and fix some system failures [ that the codes indicate to you] and then the Modules re-adajust to the new parts and repairs.........but it does not know that you put some new parts and repaired some poor conditions until you start it up and go for a ride or two...then it can see that you did some changes by reading some sensors .. get it ???
So, that re-adjustment takes drive cycles to get it where it wants it to be to attain the most effiecientcy. [ IT ADAPTS to the new parts/condition]
But , if you go in there and clear out the old wacked out of spec memory, it goes to BASE Mean [ Zero adaptations] , which should be closer to Factory settings than it was when it was wacked out from the poor running condition caused by a fault/part .
This memory has to stay fit b/c it is tailored to that car and that driver...if it is erased, it has to start all over again...
So, if one makes some out of limit code repairs and wants the car to get back to a close to normal state, dump the old memory and start new..that's all... you don;t want that those old setting running your new parts...it will still have to adapt to the new parts/conditions, but it should be closer and improve as you drive it. .. this is just a recommended short cut to save the drive cycle time it would take for re-adaptation to the new conditions [ which should now be GOOD if you repaired the right stuff]
As I said , if they were way out , they can take a little time to self correct , and in that time, they can still pop codes . So most guys clear the memory to get the thing close to normal right after you do the repairs and you don't have to worry about false codes while waiting for self correct via drive cycles.
You do not have to do this ..it is fully capable of self correction all by itself [ which was one of your questions]...but you have that option to manually do it right away, so that is most guys choice.
Don't expect to change a part, start the car for 30 seconds and wonder why it still has an old code re-appearing. Some guys don't even wait long enough for the car to go into closed loop....
But on the other hand [ and your question], if you repair. for example, a vac leak a while back , the car has already adjusted for the new No Leak condition b.c the car has had a few drive cycles. The memory clear I mention is used/done directly after a repair is made so you do not have to wait for the drive cycles. And it is specially effective if one has repaired an Out of Limit problem code.
