2002 E320 bas/esp abs light came on.

Hi. I have a 2002 E320 that just turned 79,000 miles and on my way home just now my BAS/ESP and ABS light just came on. I cant turn the ESP off like I use to. Also it just comes on and off occasionally. Any ideas?

C280Sport,

I had the same problem with my SL500 when I replaced the battery.
A member here ( Bobterry ) told me with the ignition on, turn the steering wheel all the way to the left then all the way to the right. The next time the ignition is turned on the lights should go out. I did exactly as he said and my lights went out. Good luck.

I think I will just try that. Thank you. I hope its nothing serious. Reason I say that is because I am at 79k owned it since new and have never encountered any real issues.

if you didn't disconnect the battery, reinitializing the steering angle sensor probably won't fix it. Could probably be a bad brake switch...

OK It is now official. Everything happens for a reason. I went to the shop dropped the car off. The shop said nothing wrong. No codes found. I asked if I could take it home? The shop said no. I said why? They said yuo need 4 new tires. We went out looked at it on the lift and there wear all on the inside and the rear tires where going also. The mechanic asked my wife"Did you not feel any change in the car at all? This is dangerious and the tires could of blown out and you need to keep on top something like this" I dont blame him for saying that. She is the only one who drives it daily. She drives only 80 miles a week! and the car is only out from April to end of Nov. It has 79,000 miles (2002 E320) So the car is in the shop untill Tuesday (4New Tires on the way). Something serious could of happined. Everything happens for a reason. I also have never changed the tires this car so new ones where bound to be needed soon.

Most likely you have a wheel speed sensor that has gone bad you will have to have the system scanned with a scan tool to find out which one it is.the light are just telling you that the abs has been diabled until the problem is repaired

Uh, yeah.

Replacing worn tires because they might be so bad they will spontaneously "blow-out" is not the best reason to watch your tire tread depth.

Watch the following video to see how worn tires effect stopping distances in wet weather.

http://www.tirerack.com/videos/video_popup.jsp?video=5

I've often wondered how many accidents (and deaths) are caused by people relying on the "legal" 2/32 tread depth requirement.

Tire tread depth should be checked at every oil change and the tires on my car go into the trash can when they reach 4/32nds of an inch.

what is the reasoning behind this of turning the steering wheel lock to lock?
thanks
