Interesting that the special tool didn't exist from the beginning - I thought the whole point of building a Mercedes was to have as many special tools as possible!

I haven't had time to look yet - but does the FSM contain any useful dimensions for the (hydraulic?) part that the pin in the special tool rests upon? I'm guessing there should be some limits and dimensions given for that bit...

Didn't exist then (1976) but did become available in about 1978 & still is available.

I'd be interested in a copy of the email with that information as well, if possible.

Hi:

I am checking my M117 valve shim .It is 5.1mm and I low it to 4.95 .
I do'nt know what is proper setting .
Could you send me necessary information ?

Why a 4.8mm or thinner is good for adjustment ?

Hi Folks,
I am new to the forum and have been kicking around for some time just reading. I now have two MB's to care for. I am quite proficient with car mechanics/repair so I hope to get a bunch of great advice here.

"In the beginning (1976) we didn't have that special tool!

In fact the 1976 model year book had a nicely layed out tutorial on how to set
the lifter height with a dial indicator, was somewhat a pain!

I'll see if I can get a scanned version of that procedure."

May I get the procedure? I am replacing camshafts on my M117. I would greatly appreciate the info!

All the best,

Camel
