Primer pump question( important)

Today i unscrewed my primerpump handle and started to pump it just to see how it works as i have never used it before. i noticed that on every upstroke a whole bunch of diesel flows out of the pump as though it is on top of the pump plunger? also the pump has a very shotr stroke, about 2-3 " is this normal? can some one explain how the primer pump works and is this overflow normal. i ask this because i want to change my filters soon and i dont want to be stuck with a broken primerpump and a bunch of air in my system!
i hope my description of the overflow was clear enough if not i will draw a diagram
thanks guys and girls.

The manual fuel priming pump is usually toast on these cars by this point. If the car isn't being kept in concours condition, you can buy the upgraded replacement for about $15, it has a better design but looks a little different. If you want original, it might be harder to find, the dealers stock the new design under the old p/n.

Replacement takes about 15 minutes, you should not leak any fuel from the pump body when using it.

Put in the new upgraded hand pump. You can get it from Fastlane. No more unscrewing the hand wheel on the new pump, there isn't any. Just push it down to pump and it pops back up by spring pressure. It works slicker than greased owl poop. P E H

You need a crowfoot wrench to remove and install the hand pump. The old and the new pumps take different size wrenches. If you have not had a set, try to buy a set with small arms because there is not much room there for you to turn. Sometimes, you may have to disconnect the output pipe in order to unscrew the original pump.
