A/C Compressor cross-reference
I have a 1995 SL500 with a bad A/C compressor. I ordered a reman Denso 10PA17C that all the retailers say is correct for my year and make. The dealer MBZ # is 0002300611 and it crosses correctly with the 10PA17C. This is where it gets dicey. Its not the same as the one on my car. The compressor is stamped with the number A0001403485 with a number below 084100-1180 MBZ says that the number doesn't come up in the system. A Google search came up with a German site for Mercedes Shop Forum and it shows my compressor numbered exactly. Does anyone have any idea what make or model Denso I should be ordering? Or a place I can call? MBZ says the compressors are located by engine number and it should be correct but its not and I don't know what to do. HELP MB DOC

Same damned thing just happened to me.
Awhile back, I bought a replacement Denso compressor (except I bought a new one, not a reman, so you can imagine how pissed I am...$$$$$) to replace the current one with a noisy bearing in my SL600. The car was having a bunch of other work done at Continental Imports so I shipped them the compressor I had thinking may as well hit that while they were at it. So Steve calls me back and tells me the same damned thing you're going through. And what's worse, the compressor is different and doesn't pull enough pressure to work properly, even though all the online sites show it as the correct model, it's not *really* the correct model. WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF???? So, to add insult to injury, it turns out that the *correct* one is a dealer-only part, and costs $1k. So I had to shell out another grand, in addition to what I paid for the wrong one that Denso told me was the right one (but isn't). I am annoyed as can be with Denso. It's blatantly clear that they don't know WTF they're talking about when they publish which model compressor is appropriate for which application. Thanks to them, this has been an expensive disaster. |

On the 1995 SL500...Denso shows their part number to be 471-1227. That is a NEW compressor w/clutch assembly.
I would think $400-500 retail would be a good price.

You can check your part numbers on http://www.mbwholesaleparts.com/fmpc/start/index.jsp
You have to be careful with part numbers directly on the part because they could be for a component rather than the assembly. The middle 3 numbers (230) identify the functional area, and will be the same for the same kind of part across vehicles. reman compressor installed but making noise
I installed the Denso reman but it is making noise that seems to subside around 1800 rpms but otherwise its noisey at any speed below 40 mph. The reman dealer blames it on "high" pressure in the system or contamination even though it was "flushed" out by certified ASE A/C friend. Drier was replaced but not expansion valve which is a likely original. Is it necessary to replace expansion valve and since the drier is new (six days) do I need to replace that again? Any other tips? Labor to install this compressor and flush and recharge cost me $260 total. My friend is going to remove, flush, and recharge the system but I have to remove and reinstall compressor in his garage under his supervision while he is doing other things. It might cost me another $50 or so. Any suggestions to avoid doing this again?

The ONLY way to know for sure is attaching gauges. Because "somebody says" there is high pressure it does not means such thing is happening. I would not remove anything until gauges are attached and pressures read. Noise could come from low oil in the compressor, or a faulty bearing.
Did your compressor come with the rear speed sensor? It appears a lot of 10PA17C's are around, but only the mercedes come with the rear sensor.
