Question 300E Exterior temperature gauge

Hello Benz aficionados,

I need to replace the exterior temperature gauge on my 1986 300E. The digital display shows a black spot on 50% of it.

Do I need to get this part from a MB dealer, or there are cheaper options from other suppliers ?

How much time it takes to replace it by a certified technician ?

I just got an estimate from a shop for $395.00 for parts and labour. Is this a fare rate ?

Please let me share your valuable opinion. Thanks.

Save Your Money

Greetings,

Mine doesn't work correctly on my 300E either. It shows either 5 or 6 degrees in C I suppose. I didn't see anywhere that it can be changed from F to C so I'll let it be. The outside temp really seems irrelevent to me, it's either a light coat, heavy coat or a no coat day, and by the time you get in the car it's too late anyways. You'll need to make a trip back to the house to get the coat. I'd spend my hard earned money on things that make a difference on the cars performance first and leave the cheap temp gage and sender they installed alone.

I can tell you right away that you are being ripped off.

The display itself cost about $175. My advice to you, buy it and install it yourself. It's a 10 minute job.

Vingmg:

Where can I get the digital display for $175? It seems that I was quoted $375 from parts shop here on this web site and for that reason I didn't purchase it.

My car is a '87 300SDL so may be it is different.

Hi-power,

Email me and I'll give you the contact info for the display. These guys have excellent prices on dealer only parts.

Method to change from Farenheit to Celcius

Is there a way to change the external temperature reading from F to C on a 1991 300E?

No, you can't change the temperature display from F to C on your car.

It seems to me that you could change the reading from F to C by replacing the display and it's electronics. Possibly you might have to replace the sensor too. ~~~~~~~~~~~~PEH~~~~~~~~~~~

Think the whole unit requires replacement

Greetings All,

After following this post and doing a little research on the thermistor, it can be easily obtained if that is the culprit, for about $3.70 in parts, you do the labor. I have the same problem as others and think the $3.70 can fix mine but it is also in celcius. Unfortunately that is greek to me and don't wish to carry a calculator with me to figure out it's either to cold or hot outside.
Looking at radioshack.com they also had some thermistors that might work that all ran $.59 if you care to look.
