Cool Newbee

Hi all. I'm the proud new owner of an '84 190E and have a few questions.

1. How many quarts of oil does this car hold? I've heard a few stories about Benz owners not getting enough oil put back into the car after an oil change at places like "Jiffy Lube".

2. What's the best type of oil to use? I don't know the difference between all the various weights- it's all Greek to me.

3. What the heck are all the buttons on the dash? Unfortunately the car didn't come with the original owner's manual and I can't figure out all the little diagrams on the various buttons for the heat etc......

4. What's a good repair/reference manual that I should buy?

I know these are really dorky questions but this is my first time owning a Mercedes- I've always had Hondas, which I think are completely idiot friendly. But after owning an Accord with 190K on it, I'd like to do my best to keep my 190E running & looking great. :p

Liz

For your 81 190, Haynes has a simple and effective manual for it. I have one and I think I got it from Pep Boys.

I do not have a 190E but 300Es and the 190E manual is even helpful for the large cars.

Just to be clear about "manuals," there are 2 types: the owner's manual, which should have come with the vehicle, and service manuals. You probably don't need service manuals right now, but you really should get an owner's manual post haste. It has tons of useful info. If all else fails, call the MB number (1--800-FOR-MERC).

Welcome to the list! I've learned a lot from it.

Liz, welcome to the "club". You can go to any Mercedes dealer and buy an owner's manual. I was able to get one my 1980 300SD, it took about 2 weeks and cost only $15. It is a reproduction, but the fact that they still had one available, is impressive. Oil, ohhh the old oil question. I won't go into brands and such. As it has been mentioned above, this subject has been beaten to death. That doesn't mean you should feel bad for asking. there is a search function you can use. When you get a hold of an owner's manual it will tell you what is best for your climate. I do strongly recommend you not go to Jiffy Lube or the alike for the same reason you cited. Yes Mercedes take alot of oil, my car has a 3 liter engine, yet it has an oil capacity of 2 gallons (8 quarts). The "monkeys" at Jiffy Lube would only assume 5 quarts. As for what type, by that do you mean brand or convential oil vs. synthetic?

When my 190 is back from the shop......

I'll go to an MB dealer and find an owners manual. A repair manual would be great too, but I think I can get one from Schucks.com

I saw the debates about regular oil vs. synthetic oil- totally confusing. I think I'll pick one and see how it works; but I still don't understand all the various weights, I'm more concerned with using the correct type of oil vs. using the correct brand of oil.

If you had done a search on Oils, you'd find it more confusing than ever. The discussion and debate is full of passion, to the point that it knocks you out 2 to 1.

The conclusion I drew from this discussion, is to use semi-syn oils or regular for more mature MBs. But let us not be drawn into this until you have read the threads and perhaps, post your own opinions at the end of the relevant threads.

It would be nice to pick up where we left.

Once again, welcome!

Inside the owner's manual you're getting is a guide that shows the recommended oil for your type of driving. It mostly depends on the temperature in the areas you'll be driving. In some cases you can use the same oil year round, in other cases there's different oil for the winter and summer.

The manual will not discuss the differences between synthetic and nonsynthetic oil. It's probably not the most important decision you'll make regarding your car.
