Question Compression Test Results for 1988 300E with <100k miles

Hello,

I am looking at a 1988 300E with approximately 95,000 miles. The car is in great shape, and I had the dealer do a compression check. Highest value was 160 psi and the lowest was 150 psi. Is this a reasonable range for the engine on this car? Thanks, Jim

I think a compression rate between 150 PSI and 160 PSI is pretty darn on good for any vehicle. The main thing you want to look for is, not that you have one cylinder with 150 PSi and an other one with 80.
My 1980 model 450SL has 130,000 miles on it and the compression is between 155 PSI and 168 PSI.

The pressure is good and you are within 10% all the way across. This is very good.

Good luck,

Thanks for the input Larry and scuba, I will be picking up the car on November 16. Once I get it I will let you know more about it. Thanks again, Jim

Thumbs up

This is interesting. I just did a compression check on my '90 300SE because it has 263K on it and I was thinking it might be time to trade horses before the engine got too tired.

I got readings of 165 to 170 across the board. I guess the old yacht still has plenty of life left in her.
