1994 S600 Coupe "Euro" ASR issue

On my gray market (imported to US in 2001), the ASR will illuminate, after about 5-10 minutes of idling or driving, does not seem to make a difference, but NEVER does the car go into "limp mode". Restarting the engine when this occurs does not reset the ASR light and it stays illuminated. After doing searching about ASR problems, I find that those who's ASR light illuminates, their vehicle goes into "limp mode" Prior to having the codes pulled, can anyone direct me what might cause the ASR light to illuminate WITHOUT it going into limp mode? The only issue (not sure if related or not) I found while examining the engine compartment is that the MAF air tube on the drivers side was torn, and when I temp repaired with RTV, it corrected a slightly surging idle issue it was experiencing as well.

ASR= acceleration slip regulation.

You need to have EA/CC/Isc computer scanned for codes.

I am looking to purchase a scanner like the Snap-on MT2500. Then if I HAVE to take it to the dealer I will be better informed.

Update

I got my MT2500, Mercedes cartridge, key's 21, 22, 33, & 34, 38 pin adapter, etc. I can't seem get the scanner to communicate with anything other than the base module and thats with key 34 (34 is supposed to be for 96 & up, glad I bought it). The ASR light remains illuminated. The following are the codes retrieved from base module, 8 Engine 120 left LH-SFI N3/2 voltage supply open circut. 9 Engine 120 Right LH-SFI N3/3 voltage supply open circut. 10 Base module voltage supply output fuse f2 open circut. 11 Base module voltage supply output fuse f3 open circuit. Ran some other tests I found on the scanner to try and get into controllers, and at times it would ask for key 17, which I didn't get thinking the others were all I needed. I would really like to get into the ASR and Electronic accelerator/ cruise cntrl/ idle speed module. As always, ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks !!

Mercedes USA have put out some electronics diagnostics documents out, and
the page for the Base Module is here;
http://www.startekinfo.com/manual/volumes/cd1/1_1/content.jsp

Have a look at the component location, and try to follow the links in the page with
the error codes.

But, it looks like you have a general problem with power supply to the other modules.
Check the fuses on top of the Base Module.

syljua

I have cleared the codes a few times, but when I recheck it flashed the Code 21: Pressure Switch (A7/3s1) Charge. I have found a diagram for its location, has anyone had any dealings with this and what needs to be looked at before a replacement is deemed necessary? Can just the sensor/pump be replaced or is it part of the entire pump brake regulator?

Thx

Going back....IF only the ASR lamp comes on??? OR does both ASR & ABS light come on?

The problem (ASR only) code is going to be scanned from the EA/CC/ISC computer NOT the ASR computer.

The code you posted IS from the ASR computer, not the EA computer.

The ASR light is always, on or comes within minutes even if standing still. When I connect the MBZ breakout box tool I bought from the dealer a few weeks ago and a DTC, it seems to cause the ABS light to illuminate, as once it's disconnect the ABS light goes out. ASR still light remains illuminated. So, based upon your comment, I am not sure why this might be happening, or what, if anything, I am doing wrong. Not sure what direction to go at this point.

Also, when I purchased the breakout tool from the dealer,I purchased a new brake light switch just incase. I haven't replaced it, as I am not getting any code that says the present one is not working.

Are you reading codes from pin #7 of the 38 pin connector?
IF so, what are the code numbers?

I have a similar problem with a 1994 E320 wagon. When the car is first started, the charging pump runs. After about 90 seconds or so, the pump stops and the ASR light comes on. The car is standing still, in park and at idle. The only code set was the brake light switch. Switch has been replaced, but the problem remains. The car has been to a very good shop and they are stumped. I have changed out the ASR control unit with two other units - no difference. I have checked fuses, wiring, relays and all connectors. This problem appeared after replacing the evaporator. I have replaced evaporators in at least 4 other 124's without a single problem. My friend is a seasoned, factory trained MB tech and the shop where I took the car is one of the best in the area. Switching the car off and restarting resets the ASR light, but the cycle just repeats itself. No codes have reappeared.

Does the charging pump run when you first start the car? When the pump quits running does the ASR light come on?

Tom

benzfan109,
Just like the S600, what code (number) do you get from the EA computer??
ON the W124 car, that code is read from pin #14 of the 16 pin connector.

We have no codes set on 10 or 14. Originally we had two brake light switch codes set in the EA and ABS. Once the switch was replaced and the codes cleared, they have not come back.

The code is coming from pin #6 of the 38 pin connector. it is what I thought is the abs/asr controller.
