W126 rear window won't go up
One of the rear windows in my 1987 420 SEL won't go back up - I can hear the motor running, but the window stays down. And the glass rattles when I close the door, so I suspect the window has jumped off the track. I know there are others who have had this problem; can anyone send me the thread that explains what to do?

Do a search on sliding jaw.

Your going to have to remove the door panel to investigate regardless of the problem. Could be a mounting screw has rattled loose after all these years and now the gear teeth are not meshing properly due to bad alignment. If you hear that the motor is still working its will most likely be an easy fix.
Door panel removal takes about 5 minutes. |

Save yourself some time and get a clevis pin and a keeper pin at the hardware store. This pin is similar to the rivet but is longer and has lots of holes along its length. Grind off the rivet to free the arm from the slider. Drill out the hole in the window arm so the new pin will fit and cut the pin to the proper length. Assemble the slider and the locking pin into the window mechanism.
This has the advantage of not having to remove the drive motor and arm and pound on the supplied MB rivet 200 times with a hammer. I'll have to post some pics of my car.

That is the smartest thing I've read on this forum in a long time!

I used a welder:

I use a welder too, but the clevis pin sounds smarter.

wbain5280,
Thanks for the picture and great tip. The universal clevis pin is also known as a Tine pin. The keeper pin is also known as a Hitch pin. I imagine one can also use a cotter pin. I just bought the materials to do a fix. (1989 300SE right rear window) My question is, did you use a 2/10 inch diameter clevis pin (with a 4/10" diam. base) or the 3/10 inch diamter one (with the 5/10" diam base)? Do you recall whether you used a washer inside the nylon jaw or did you just use washers on the outside under the keeper pin? Thanks.
