1992 300sl transmission compatibility question..,..
1992 300sl transmission compatibility question..,..
post3d this over in the sl forum as well... would the trans from a 1990 300se or a 1990 300e work in the '92 sl? i'm trying to decide if fixing the sl is viable and it would be more so if i had the trans for it already here. thx in advance gh

From doing research on my 91 300SL, it is likely that any 722.5 5 speed auto will work as would a 6 cylinder 722.3 4 speed auto with a drive shaft change. Unless someone offers bolt specific reasons why, I'd say the 300SE is a go.
Using car-part dot com , the universe appears to be 3 transmissions in the 90 to 93 span then 94 to 96. However, the differences may only be valve body calibration / part number or some internal difference. When you search on car-part, use 300SL for 90 to 93 searches and SL class for 94 to 96. ( The 97 SL320 got the 722.6 electronic shift 5 speed ) The 722.5 5 speed in your car is a 722.3 4 speed with 5 th in the tail housing. The 722.5 appears to be a inch or two longer overall, not sure if the trans mount is in the same place or not. The M103 / M104 did come with a 4 or 5 speed so bell patterns will interchange. Near as I can tell, the 5 speed was not very common and only used in higher end small motored cars like the 300SL, SL320 and 300SE, the V8 never got the 5 speed because it has reduced torque capability. I'm not sure the 90 300E was a 5 speed. These trans have a electrically operated 5 th and a solenoid to reduce governor pressure to delay upshifts so the cats warm up quickly. |

If you have a quick look on EverythingBenz - Mercedes-Benz Forum and Web Search Using Google
you can see that the 300SL had both a 722.352 and a 722.500 transmission option - which one do you have? The 300SE had a 722.351 as well as a 722.319. Check the differential final drive ratios - cross your fingers and hope for the best!

you could just bite the bullet and put a stick in. Shifter and clutch should be the same as a W124; so much other stuff is. -CTH

i did a 5 speed swap in a bmw 745 turbo about 5000 dollars ago and swore i'd never make that mistake again......which, loosely translated, means i've been thinking about doing it with this car....
