Help! Trying to replace cam position sensor on M104 engine

I had my independent tell me that I could order the part and easily replace it myself (old one was cracked in half). So I tried it for my '90 300CE. (The old sensor was staying engaged even though cracked.) But I have not been able to disengage the plug from the part of the old sensor into which it was plugged. The metal piece in the middle of the old sensor moves around, but I can't get the plastic piece surrounding it out of the plug. I even broke off a piece of the plug in an attempt to loosen it up. Anybody have any ideas? The old sensor pretty well disintegrated on the part of it that held together in the past, so I don't think I can drive the car. I have tried to tape it together so I can drive the car to the indie, but I am afraid to start it.

Thanks in advance for any help.
