valve body cost

well, i had my low revving tranny checked out by my local MB indy. as expected, the diagnosis was the valve body, but no specifics. am i right to assume that it would cost more or about the same to replace the valve body than to make adjustments to it? i can imagine the procedure if it were to be fixed, open up the tranny, adjust, refill, road test repeat as required. i was quoted 2hrs and about $450 for a rebuilt valve body from MB - is that a fair price?

List price on 140-270-78-07-88 is $432. Would also need filter kit & 6.5qts of fluid to do job. Warranty time is 1.8 hrs w/o any adjustments!
WHAT is OR isn't the trans doing correctly??

Here's my original description of the problem:

What controls Full Throttle/Kickdown on M104?

What does "Warranty time is 1.8 hrs w/o any adjustments" mean? The MB tech has a very good rep in this area. I saw, or rather felt, what was done though. They backed off the bowden cable to the point that it was holding gear to about 3.2k rpm in 3rd at part throttle. I had told them I had already done all that and that the problem was not part throttle. Thing was, they left it in that position and I had to screw it back in to make the part throttle shifts normal. At least they figured that external adjustments were not going to fix it.

Exclamation tranny experts help! (Steve, Mike F, MB Doc)

re: allen head adjustment in valve body per Mike Freeman
Quote:
make sure all valve body mounting bolts are properly tightened,if bolts are ok there is a small allen head adjustment on the right front of the valve body.
turn this screw out,but don't start with large adjustments maybe 1/4 turn at a time.if you go too far the r.p.m. limiter come into play.
these adjustment should only be performed after checking condition of cable and it's adjustment.
m.f.
the description of this adjustment that Mike Freeman suggested makes it seem worthwhile rather than just springing for a new valve body. it appears to be less of a job (parts and labor-wise) than replacing the valve body itself. the problem as it appears to me is that each adjustment requires a drain and fill. i would be happy if the WOT & kickdown shiftpoints went up 1k rpm. any suggestion on how much to turn that screw to get this result? also, it seems that the new valve body may need adjustment anyway? BTW is that the "shift control pressure valve" that is being adjusted? is that the hole directly under where it is indicated in the picture?

i would really appreciate input on this one as it is a non-critical problem for me. there are other areas of the car i can spend the $600 on.

thanks guys
