My benz got hit... some options...

Hey there,
Yea, I was driving my parents car and my dad was driving mine on the way to get the brake pads changed. (The light had been on for over a month, but my dad insisted it was a fused light indicator... when I found out what it really was, I refused to drive the car, because if I were to get into a wreck... the insurance would probably drop me) Anyway... im driving in front of him, when I have to stop pretty hard, he however, can't... and he hits me at like 3mph. The land rover has no damage because he hit me at the bumper, but the mercedes got hit right under the hood badge, and the hood is all crumpled. The front ligts are also both craked, and im afraid there might be some radiator damage. I however couldn't really tell because I was looking throught the holes made in the grille... Anyway, we drove the car to the shop, and the insurance guy is supposed to come out and cut a check. Now, the car was a 92 300E, and it will most likely need a new hood, and definetaly new lights. So I was thinking this would be a perfect time to get euros, considering they cost less than OEM american assemblys. Also, since I need a new hood, should I get one from a newer w124? I was thinking I would get an avant guarde grill, considering that and the original cost the same. But im not sure about the hood. Would the newer hood require any modifcations to fit? The only reason I would consider a newer one is because I heard the euros don't quite fit with the old style hoods. Am I wrong here? Thanks.

Get a new dad while you're on. Euro spec ones come pretty cheap these days!

Hehehe. Well, he did lose the manual to the car, and he did insist on the warning lamp being for the taillights, but he was never too involved with the benz, so it was my fault for listening to him. As far as the accident was concerned, it was really not his fault at all, I went and looked at the brakes at the mech's place, there were no pads left on the front, and that panic stop had eaten a big scratch in the front left rotor. Just think, it could have been me driving, and then I wouldn't be able to drive cause no insurance would take me (Im 16 btw, and the other car is a RED land rover, premiums are through the roof)

I don't know why the Euro's wouldn't fit with the old style hood - that is what they were designed to work with, and fit perfectly on mine.

If you get the 94 hood, you might as well let the insurance get the US 94 lights as well - they don't look much different from the Euros, and put out about the same light - much better than the 86-92 US lights.

Yea, I was thinking about getting us-spec lights. But since insurance is paying for it anyway, I might as well get some nice Bosch or Hella light units with the fancy shmancy leveling gadget. And, I think I like the look of the 94-95 hood better, ill just have to see the total costs before I do anything...

Well, I talked to my mech, and he didn't feel comfortable with installing the 94-95 hood. He was concerned about fitment etc. So, considering he will be doing all the work, I decided I will just stick with the old style hood and grille, and order appropriate euro lights.

I did this to my 88 300CE. The hood is the same size there is no modification required. The only difference between the two is the shape of the front end for the grille.
Euro lights don't work for this particular setup because the lights need to be "engraved" in the top inner corners for the hood. You need to get the stock 94-95 headlights, which BTW look the same as Euros.
If I were you, I would convert it. Much cleaner look and you don't have to worry about that cheap plastic that turns yellow.
This is a great opportunity to do it (insurance pays). You better speak to your mechanic and tell him that the only difference is cosmetically at the front end. After all, they are all 124s.

Well, its too late :-( My mech wasn't too confortable with the idea, I really have no idea why, so I went ahead and ordered the 92 style Euros. Plus, my dad was vehementaly against it. And well, since he owns the car, I had my hands tied... (He thought the hood wouldn't fit etc... he doesn't really know what he is talking about) I didn't really mind the chrome surround of the older model cars, I actually think it made the car more stately, however, I don't know how good its gonna look once I get a wald kit I was actually hoping to find an avant guarde style grille for it... so does anyone know where to find one for a 92 300e?

#1 - Tell y our mech to come to this site.

#2. Tell your mech that the later hood witht he later lights will be a direct fit, no problems at all, the hood is the same, apart fromt he grill area, and with the updated lights, it is a direct bolt on.

I would have ordered the 94-95 hood anyway, and if it didn't work then I would have worried about it.

But Lets just be glad your car will be back together soon.

If it were me, I would have gone for the hood upgrade, which I would do if my car had front damage. And Which I will do later if I decide I want to. Personally, I'm just going to black out my grill frame like before, and enjoy it.
