Transmission up shift fails

190e 2.6 '91 drove in garage last evening all ok. Tried to leave this morning & I let it warm up for a while. I started out in drive noticed it was taking long time to up shift. Well, it never did. So, I tried some things. Starting in 2 on console it will start in lower gear, but never shift. Start in 3 on console it will start there, but never shift up & the same with D. If you start in 2 on console it will never shift up if you manually move the shifter, and as well if you start in D or 3 on console it won't shift down to 2 manually. The only way you can alter it is by shutting of the engine and starting it again & putting it in 2 or 3 or D. Starting out in D like normal you can never feel it shift & it never is in 4th gear. I have checked the vacuum to modulator and it's good. I unplugged the kick down switch, and that didn't help. I checked the fluid is it good and clean and to the full mark when hot. I haven't did anything else at this point. Would appreciate any help on the issue.

i am not a trans guy but you said you are getting vacuum to the modulator. How much vacuum are you getting? when was the last transmission service done? If it has been awhile then something might of clogged up the hydraulics

I pulled the hose off of the manifold & tested the modulator to the transmission. It held very good no leakage. I put a gauge on the port on the manifold where I pulled to test the modulator & it was very high. With it unplugged to test the modulator it made the engine struggle with it opened up. The transmission was went through by a very, very reputable transmission shop here not much more than 8K miles ago, they re-sealed it & several other things I was told by them. It was done by the previous owner before I bought it. The whole car only has in 80's on it, but I know that doesn't much matter on a benz. I don't have a pressure testing kit for the transmission yet. Thanks, for the reply!

I got the transmission issue fixed about the 5th of this month. The problem was the governor, that fails on the 722.3 transmissions in the 190's. The valve spring ends up tearing up the gear. Shops many times fix the transmission on these, and get them shifting again, but they don't fix the cause. The cure on the governor is to put the safety plate in there. It solves the issue on them. It now shifts out of the warm up without the teeth and neck jarring shift that stressed the flex joints to the max. I noticed it, also, shifts much more ergonomic on the rest of the driving shifts, as well. Mercedes doesn't include it in the transmission rebuild kits. It is less than a fifty dollar cost for the parts & it is peace of mind knowing that you won't be driving a single speed transmission waiting for an up shift, that is never going to happen. It's not a matter of if these transmissions are going to fail, it is just a matter of when they are going to fail. Mercedes fixed the issue in 93, and they are not affected by the problem. This is the second time mine failed-once at 75K & again at 83K.

ON the rear pump assembly the O-ring, intermediate plate, Pump housing, Shut-off piston, Pump drive gear, Pump driven gear, Compression spring, Spring retainer, Closing cover, Locking ring, O-ring Teflon rings, & hex socket screws(for the Rear Pump Assembly) get discarded. Replace with new seal & safety plate & new Hex Socket Screws. The secondary pump was the weak link in the tranny & was what caused the failures. It was only good for pushing the car anyway, and it's against the law to push a car anyhow! All that plastic surround bumper stuff don't work for pushing cars...they are just towed.

yikes...i thought it was an external part.... no need to buy insurance parts for a transmission failure.... that's beyond our diy capabilities.
