Condensation/Fog inside on rear glass

Hey everyone,

I have been noticing that my 420SEL has some condensation on the inside of the rear glass. All the windows are up and the climate control is OFF... Any ideas where this might be coming from?

I think one of the climate control vents might not be closing entirely...however if thats the case, why wouldnt other windows fog up as well?

I also noticed that my 190E will fog up easily inside if I have say like two people in there..really easy in the back and sides of the car..

Just looking for some ideas. Can't really work/invest too much on this project. I've got two rear glass replacements on the 300SDs coming up..

-Kris

The back of the car tends to be cooler. It's further from the heating/AC/warmth from engine firewall and the warmth of the driver. So, condensation is most likey to be found at the rear.

And... If it's alot of condensation, you have a leak. I had a car with a very, very minor leak at the foam seal around the trunk and it caused condensation on the read windshield. Another issue in some cars is when the drain holes in the bottom of doors become occluded, like when the plastic liner inside drops when the adhesive fails- causing water to sit in the door and condensation to form on that window. Barring issues like that, it is probably just a temp differential issue.

OH YEAH- and if you haven't replaced your heater core in your 190e(not sure about the failure rates in other models)... Check for very slightly damp carpets! It may be time! My 190's heater core leak started out with the slightest of condensation issues, and rapidly became an issue where I couldn't drive the car unless the windows were down and the sunroof was open.

Got that taken care of and there hasn't been a condensation issue since.

There are also drain tubes that run from the sunroof to the rear c-pillar area.

I'm fairly certain that the 420SEL has a nice chunk of trunk seal missing. The 201 MIGHT too. I'm not sure though.

my 89 300ce sometimes has the same issue, the back window fogs up,its due to condensation in the car, moisture, you may even have a tiny water leak causing the humidity to build up,dont use the rear defrost its so strong it drains the battery on a stock 70 amp alternator. just turn on the defrost up front and open the sun roof a tiny bit this should clear the window.

I had this problem and I solved it by getting a diamond-tipped drill bit (3/8"), and drilling a series of holes in the rear windshield. Just angle them so no rain will come in them.

Then I added a small fire pit on the hat rack. I find that burning incense produces just enough heat to dissipate condensation. Also covers up the smell of farts.
