I appreciate the second opinion regarding the R134. I have a 91 300E with non-working air. I've been given opinions both ways as far as how to approach restoring it.
My daughter's 190E (bought last November) was converted to R134 by the PO.
They told us it just needed to be re-charged, which translated to me that there's a leak somewhere. I'll find out the virtues, or not, of a converted system this summer when I have to deal with it.

I'm sticking with my head gasket opinion though. I've seen a ton of them and read about 10 times more on the forums. My 300E is on it's second new head gasket (first one done at a dealership, second by me). I look at most every E-class I see for sale and without exaggeration half of them either are near un-drivable or show the classic signs. A few blatantly bad ones claimed not to know it. One of them had globs of brown sludge in the coolant tank and said he wasn't aware of it. I don't see how, the cooling system was completely fouled. Another guy, car almost as bad as the former, actually got mad at me when I pointed it out saying I was just trying to get a lower price.

Well, I just got back from looking at the car.

The kid selling it is saying that it is was his Grandma's car, but she recently passed away, so he needs to sell it.

Although the kid said nothing was wrong with it, it actually has a dent and fender "push in" on the driver side front fender. The kid says his grandma hit the garage as she was backing out, but i'm kind of skeptical about that.

It is also missing the bottom trim piece on the passenger side.

The seats seem really weak too. When I sit in them, the springs nearly bottom out. Are they supposed to be really "springy", or should they be firm when sitting on them.

However, what bother me most is that there seems to be a problem with the climate control. No matter which buttons I pressed on the car, I couldn't get the vents to blow any air whatsoever, so because of this I couldn't even tell if the ac or heat was working properly.

So, my question is what could cause this? I NEED the ac and heat to work, but I can't have a very expensive repair on my hands.

Overall, the car looked nice, ran well and strong, shifted well, and all of the electrical stuff worked (aside from heat, ac).

What are your thoughts?

Thanks!

Thanks for the response.

How difficult and expensive is it to replace the blower motor or the blower motor regulator?

Aside from that, the car seemed really nice and the interior was like new.

$2500 is the current offer, but I left telling him and I would get back to him tomorrow after I did some research because I'm worried about the ac, heat issues.

Do you hear the blower motor come on? I think the center vents only work when the A/C is on and the side vents (and vents by your knee) work with the heater and the A/C. Check the fuses, even if they look good (not obviously blown), spin them in place to try and re-establish good contact. Those ceramic type fuses are well known to lose contact as the metal oxidizes.
I was ready to replace the wiper motor in my daughter 190E, when I checked the fuse it looked okay, I spun it and the wiper came on momentarily. It wasn't blown but I couldn't get to make good contact, replaced it and the wiper has worked fine ever since.
Just a suggestion, maybe worth checking.

It would be highly unusual for a grandma to bottom out the seat springs in 95k - something's wrong there.

The early style seats are like that. Very "springy" and not all that supportive.

Dustin, the cause of the blower not working could be as simple as the 30-amp strip fuse (inside a small black plastic box on the driver's side strut tower) being cracked. A replacement strip fuse is a few dollars.

As I recommended previously if you aren't familiar with MB automobiles have a PPI performed by a MB-trained tech who can evaluate the car's condition and what it will cost to make it right.

I'm also skeptical about the grandma story, unless she weighed 300 lbs.
