Dashectomy here I go.

So on Sunday, I found out that we are expecting our third child.

Makes me thankful for the e320 and its third row seat.

Well, its time to replace the evaporator so last night we started digging into it. Got the center console out, the instrument cluster, the passenger airbag and the dash. Took us about 3 hours.

Now on my e320 there is a metal structural tube that goes across the dash and a support that goes from what looks to be the floor up to that tube. Do we need to take those tubes out in order to get to the evap, or can we just work around it?

I recall removing the tube when I did mine.

Congratulations! It is nice looking in the rear view mirror seeing a row of three smiling faces...

...sorry I can't help with the dashectomy - it sounds painful.

I've got really good help. so the dashectomy is already 40% over. ordered the R/D and the pag oil. I'm pumped.

Also....I have two girls, you can see them in the pics of my car in the detailing thread. I'm kinda thinking I'd like to add some testosterone to the crew.

Congrats on expansion of the clan! Would it be too much to ask that this one be born with interest in helping Dad keep the fleet running? I have three boys, each of whom have a passing desire to work on cars. "Passing" meaning: walking past me in the driveway when I have one of the 124s apart...

Also, Kudos to you for tackling the evaporator job.

Ahhh did you start 'em young enough? I bought "first born" a boiler suit when he was two - and I always let his twin sisters help if they want...

remove braces

The horizontal crossmember and vertical brace are removed.

There are at least 3 good threads on this board about this job. I rec you find them.

Also, most rec replacing the vacuum pods while the heater box is accessible.

Tarheel or Wolfpack? A Duke grad would still be fiddling with how to get the radio out.

Is that how those evaporators normally fail? I mean, the hole in it, is that a natural failure? It does appear that the hole formed from the inside and progressed outward.

Its wider at the exterior than the interior, more like something ate its way in. It could also have the the 4 inch woodscrew we found going through the false firewall...but I doubt it. It may be that the aluminum eating mites claimed by MBUSA are to blame....I guess If I had known where the hole was I could have put some jb weld on it with a mirror, a flash light, and a plumbing snake. I am on my way up now. I'll have ac before long.
