If the positive cable is too short, doesn't it mean that the new battery has the wrong polarity?

It means it is not the correct battery for the application.

Wrong battery.

(... and I don't think that was the "all time stupid move"... I believe I still own that one... with the truck running I jumped out to move the garbage cans... slammed the drivers door while getting out... door was locked.... truck was running in the driveway all doors locked no spare key... and the KIDS were in the back seats... THAT my friend was THE all time stupid move and it is MINE ).
