transmission issues.
I have a 94 C280 with about 158 k on it . Bought used. about 4 -5 months ago. ran fine shifted smoothly , no leaks... perfect car was well taken care of.. pleanty of service invoices from reputable benz mechanics. Drove the car 40 miles to work , parked for about 6 hours , got in it started drove about 1 1/2 blocks and zilch, nada no more movement. Stopped looked for leaks, none found. no grinding sounds, no strange noises, no slipping previously indicating something wrong. It does shift into reverse and the car does move in reverse so i don't think it's the torque converter, but when I put it in drive, 2nd or 1 st it just doesn't seem to engage the gears... Has anyone experienced something like this ??? Any I deras as to what might be wrong??? I haven't taken it to anyone yet but wanted to get any feedback before I take it. I did check for loose connections but didn't see any... Please help.. thank you in advance.

Common issue on the 722.4_series trans.
Either a broken B2 piston OR band.

thyank you
Thank MBDOC.. How difficult / expensive a repair bill should I be looking at ??? I am mechanically inclined but have never worked on an MB tranny. Do I have to Take it out or can it be done without doing that??? Do you have a ballpark idea of what it should cost to have done ??/ justy don't want to get ripped off. Thank you again

hey 94c 280,
A couple of years back, i experienced the same exact problem with my 1993 300E with the 722.4 transmission. I do agree with MBDOC's suggestions, but i would like to add the following: In my case the Problem was that the B2 dog-bone/B2 thrust pin fell out of its intended position. The cost to fix was about 10-15 bucks for parts from the dealer. To get a better idea of what i am talking about, see the following site: http://mb.autokit.com.ua/s/car/124.088/19A/722.433/09Z/27/060/ click on the image, the part that broke was the plastic thrust pin holder(25) allowing the B2 thrust pin(20) to fall out of its intended position. The job can be done without removing the transmission from the vehicle, it involves dropping the transmission oil pan, removing the transmission mount allows the transmission to be moved towards the drivers side of the vehicle, which allows you access to the B2 piston cover and therefore makes B2piston removal possible. Then the transmission filter needs to be removed(when i did so the dog-bone fell out) and finally, the valve body needs to be removed for partial access to the B2 brake band. good luck, and lemme know if you need any additional advice |

b2 piston? reverse works no forward gears
Thanks for this helpful advice.
The same has happened to my 79 300TD. This morning all forward gears stopped working after a barely audible click in the tranny but I managed to reverse all the way back up the driveway. I'd love to know of posts that take us through the motions of repairing this, and which parts to buy. |
