2.6 head uses slightly smaller valves and the chamber is a different shape -- so will it "fit", yes. But no, you should not use it.

Have you had a quote to rebuild what you've got yet?

The 260 head will change the compression ratio, and might make it so high that it won't work with pump gas.
These heads can be fixed up almost no matter what's wrong with it. I had one corroded between combustion chamber and water jacket. They welded it up and it's still on the car. That was in 2000.

The car is running on LPG, harder on the valves and seats.
Seats are worn, one valve seems to be leaking. Cam has seen better times after +300K mls. Of course it can be fixed, but new seats, cam, rockers, machining valves etc. will be more expensive than a good used head. Local junkyard had one from a 260 that looked like new for $ 250 , including cam 300's with higher milage are $ 400 including cam. I will pull the head tomorrow, the view from my scope was not very clear. Rob |

Thanks for the offer.
I think it will be easier to get one a bit closer to home. My main transportation is now an old motorcycle and it's getting colder. Luckily 300's are not very rare over here. Rob |

Found a complete engine with half the mileage for $400 at a local shop that specializes in converting Mercedes from petrol to diesel.

Same here. Had one car (300e 2.6) with a head problem. Sourced a complete engine for $ 460.00. Changed it myself. Head rebuild would have cost far more.
Interestingly I replaced the 2.6 engine with a 3.0litre. Left the 722.4 on. Car goes very well with 2.6 EZL and 2.6 ECU. Complete engine for $460.00 included everything - water pump, fans, AC, inlet manifold and complete injection. (Engine 170,000K's - 110.000miles) |
