So many 722.6## transmissions to pick from

I'm looking for the newest factory transmission that will be a direct fit in a 1999 SL500. Its not very easy finding interchange information, all I have came up with is I can install up to a 2002 SL500 722.624 trans in my 1999.

Does any one have experience in this area?

Welcome to the forum

Interchanging transmissions is a common "problem" we DIYers come up against. On the whole these questions are usually asked for cars that are somewhat older than yours but there are three areas that I know of in which the answer can be found

1) Use EPC (www.startekinfo.com)

Plug in the VIN number of your car to try and find the part number for your 722.624 transmission.

Plug this part number back into the part number search function to see which vehicles this was fitted by the factory.

2) The factory service manual (FSM) should have information regarding which transmission was fitted to which car (by the factory)

3) Hearsay and rumour / practical experience / experimentation

This is the grey area - many transmissions can actually be physically fitted to an engine / the adapter plate that is fitted to an engine...

...so you might find that one fits...

...however it might not be the right transmission and it might not work well because of

a) final drive ratios
b) drive shaft lengths
c) mounting points
d) valve body / governor shift points
e) wiring
f) linkages
g) transmission could fit on engine but not fit in car
h) a non disclosed problem!

For older transmissions you'll hear / read a lot about starter "ears" / "bumps" that are on the wring side of the transmission - that is usually the starting point for us old car owners...

Thanks for the info. I'm trying to avoid buying another subscription. I do have EPC on my star but it hasnt allowed me to use it every since I bought the unit. Anyways

I found this as a part number for my 722.624 trans 1402709600

So far the newest trans I can find that will work is out of the 2002 SL500 or the 2002 E55.

It would be nice to know the difference between this trans and the next version, one difference that comes to mind on cars a few years newer comes with a shifter that has left and right tilt for manuel shift and I think the electrical plug moves to the rear of the trans.

For any one else in my situation should know that alldatadiy.com gives incorrect information in regards to the trans ID info, they are telling me it is a 722.620 and giving me R&I info for a 722.9

Just use a different credit card # and register again. You won't need to pay.

I'm sure you have another credit or debit card somewhere...if not go get a $20 rechargeable one from Walmart, then spend it all once you've put the # in.

The real question is why do you want to use a newer transmission? Unless you find a interchange sub 3 years old, mileage matters more than age if you are installing a used one.

The 722.6xx , NAG1 , W5A580 is used on many rear drive Chrysler / Jeep vehicles.( I think Sprinter vans too ) So, parts and people that can rebuild this unit in the USA is growing.

I was hoping for a newer bolt in transmission so it has updated internals compared to my 722.624 design.

The next question would be, what are the specific internal updates are you looking for?

Do you know what year the updates showed up? If there are no new updates, looking for a newer trans wont solve enything.

What specific problem are you trying to cure?
