Question Glow light coming on while driving: 300SDL

Hello,

I have an '86 300SDL and the glow plug light has been coming on recently while driving. It comes on for 3 or 4 seconds and has done so twice in the last month. Never did this before. Car now has about 230,000km on it (140k miles)

I have all of the service receipts from the previous owner, so I know the glow plug relay was changed a few years ago. I can't find any receipts for glow plugs, so I can't confirm whether they have ever been changed or not.

Glow plug fuse was replaced 3 months ago, and I did it with the battery still connected. Didn't realize the circuit was live all the time, so when I touched the screwdrive to the screw, the original fuse melted and made a loud pop (pretty cool, actually). Disconnected the battery and continued with fuse replacement. Car has run fine since, so I'm not sure if this is related or not..

Will be testing the glow plugs this weekend with an ohmmeter, but does this sound like I'm ready for a brand new set of plugs?

Thanks!
Neal

Similar problem

Neal where did you find the relay and fuse for the car???? I have an 86 SDl as well and have not had any problem till this morning. And the books I have make no mention of a fuse or relay, I figured they are there but could not find them.

Thanks Ric

The relay is located under the hood on the drivers side. It basically sits in front front left wheel "hump", near the ABS pump if I remember correctly. It's a black box about 4" or 5" square and has a wiring diagram with a number of terminals marked on it. I think the terminals are labelled 1 through 6, and #86 or something like that.

Pull the plastic cover off where the bunch of wires come out of it (you'll see what I mean). The fuse is inside. Don't do what I did and replace the fuse live! Make sure you disconnect the battery since that fuse is apparently always live even with the key out of the ignition...

Let me know if I can help out in some way. Is your glow light not working? That can signify bad glow plugs also.

If you can't find the box, let me know and I'll take a picture of mine. I'm going from memory here but it's pretty easy to find.

Sounds good!

Thanks Neal! It was on the other side in my 300D and I did not have much trouble shooting time this morning. I think I can find it, but will sure check back if I have a further problem. The light had been working last evening, however new plugs and a timing chain were planned for this summer.

Thanks again!

Ric

If the light is not coming on, you may want to do those glow plugs earlier.

My 300SD had an "intermittent" light which I now understand means a 2nd plug was dying (meaning the 1st was already dead). When the 2nd plug died, the light didn't come on and I was dead in the water until I had the plugs swapped. Had no garage at the time and paid a shop $200 to do it!

I'd pop in those new glow plugs soon if yours are original. Although I don't believe in replacing parts "just for the heck of it", it wouldn't be a bad idea to put in new plugs and a new strip fuse right away!

You can always keep one of the spare glow plugs and your old glow fuse in the trunk as spares..

Neal
