240D interior kick panels

The kick panels (the ones above your feet, under the dash) are fastened by some peculiar kind of plastic thing. It looks like a big flat-headed screw, but it won't screw out (at least it felt like I was going to break it).

Can someone tell me how these plastic thingies come out of there?

This is a 1982.
