Hours/Cost effort for amateur to ri-ring 240D engine
How many hours and how much time would it take me to rebuild this engine correctly this time? It burns oil like crazy. Lasttime I rebuilt it I didnt rebore the cylinders and I used non-OEM rings. I like this Car a lot.....

Is my wife secretly draining the oil at night?
My 240D uses almost one quart evey 100 miles! Any solutions besides rebuilding? Sometimes I think the oil isnt going out the xhaust or the rings--like my wife is draining it at night--is this possible?
My 300D uses almost no oil at all--land it has 240,000 miles!! I would love to rebuild the 24)D engine again--I love the car |

to do it right is a big job. first disassemble engine and take block to machine shop to have cylinders checked for roundness and condition. If you are lucky - you could have just bad rings from not doing it right the first time. If the cylinders are round and the tolerences are within spec you could get away with breaking the glaze and installing new rings. Contact Phil at FastLane for prices on parts required. The end cost all hinges on the condition of your block and whether you need reboring and new oversized pistons or not.

You need to do it right or not at all.
I got one at the shop right now. One of our techs rebuilt (ring job) the engine a number of years ago. He drove it a year and sold it. The car always had a ton of blow-by and used enough oil that eventually the new owner ran it low and ruined the lower end. He traded us the car for work on his 300e. It sat a year and we got slow so we took itapart figuring that we would throw another crank in it and fly. I personally wasn't involved. After it got disassembled it sat and recently my assistant decided to put it together. My partner whined, but I refused to do it without new pistons. Here we were going to put $2400 worth of labor into this thing and for the lack of $300 worth of parts it would remain the same POS that it had been. MB says that original piston to cyl wall clearance should be around .001 inch. The wear tolerance is .004in. Well I can tell you from many years experience when you have .004 wear it is not in a circle, it is oval and when you put new round rings in the hole they DO NOT seal. You might get away with just rings on some gas motors but doing it to a diesel is just a plain waste of time (and gaskets).

Does oil get past Vacuum Pump diaphragm
I have heard in Vacuum Pump shutdown systems, which I have in my 240D, oil gets pst the Vacuum Pump diaphragm. is this possible? How do I confirm this?
Also if my piston bores are that bad, I think I would have to (a) both resleeve and rering or (b) replace old pistons with new pistons, rebore , and replace rings either way, this is expensive and would run maybe $1000 I am thinking. Is this a correct estimate? The engine disassembly and reassembly would be done by me, but machine shop time obviously wouldnt. In that case maybe I would start checking auctions and papers for another Car....... |

In my recent rebuild I went with new sleeves, new pistons and new rings. I do not think you can lose as much oil as you say through the shutoff device without making a BIG mess somewhere.

There is no need to replace the sleeves unless they won't clean up on a .5mm over bore.
We use the oversize pistons and bore. If one or more doesn't clear then on those we install the new liners and bore them to the same oversize. New pistons come with rings and new liners always have to be bored to size, so it doesn't matter which size you bore to. The Mahle pistons we got for the 240D cost $69 a piece. Its my experience that sites like fastlane are charging anywhere from 10-30% over what I pay for the same.
