Poor cold starting and instant dying when you lift off the throttle when the engine is cold is probably a fueling issue. Our W124 did that once and it was a lack of cold start valve fuel injection - in our case, due to a failed OVP relay. It can be checked by loosening the injector and its pipework so that you can squirt it into an empty pop bottle (the translucent plastic type) while the engine cranks over.
