2002 S430 starting problem
Hey guys, having problems starting my car (2002 s 430) if it has been sitting for awhile. I have to leave the key in the ignition for 15 minutes or more for the car to start. In the cold it could take up to 45 minutes for the car to start. I put a new battery in the car after I thought that it didn't have enough power to all the components that wasn't it. Not sure if its the alternator or a loose connection somewhere. At times it will work the radio and other components even when I cannot turn the ignition on in the car. If I stick the key in the ignition everything works except the ignition will not turn right away and when left in the ignition after awhile I will here a series of clicks and the key engages and I can start the car. Also at times the car will not go out of park, the abs lights stays on as well as the ESP light stays lit. Any suggestions on what could be the problem?? Ignition, alternator, key or something else?? Please help!!!

Sounds like the EIS itself is bad or could be the key. The ESL might be stuck, the EIS won't release unless the ESL has released first.
I doubt it is related to anything else you are suggesting like a loose wire or the alternator. If you have the second key you could try that as a test. When you insert the key are you getting any kind of an error message in the odometer area? The ESP light is probably due to having the battery disconnected. Next time you get it started try turning the steering wheel all the way one way then all the way the other way a couple times, this will reset the steering angle sensor. You probably have to relearn the power windows and the sunroof as well, common things that happen when the battery is disconnected. The ignition switch should not be affected by disconnecting the battery, unsure why you are having problems with all that.

Well, there may be more than one thing going on too. A bad brake switch could give the ABS/ESP problem, and I believe prevent the shift out of park.
How many miles? A worn shifter linkage bushing could (theoretically) cause enough play to prevent turning the key due to the shift interlock. Also don't forget to check the ground wire connection at the nut behind the little access panel in the rear passenger footwell. Mine was loose when I got the car and it cause some intermittent issues. Just some ideas to rule out teh easy things first.

After the battery has been dead for a long time the ecu goes into "default" mode. When you turn the key to pos 2 after this the electric engine cooling fan comes up. How do you "reactivate" or bring the ecu out of default mode Gilly?
