Fan belt improper alignment 1978 330D

I bought a used 300D two months ago. It threw the fan/alternator belt within 300 miles. When I installed the new belt, I noticed the alternator is about 3/8" out of line with the fan/crank pulley groove. Is this a correctable problem?
