Hi again!!...I have a new problem with my transmission (1981 380sel)(Trans 722.3) We changed the clutch plates because we were having problems with reverse. Now we have good reverse but the car will only change from first to second gear. HELP!! can anyone please tell me what might be wrong and why this is happening and what we can do to correct this. Thanks!!:

Get a rebuilt unit. Unless you have rebuilt alot of these trannys you are going in blind. Listen to people like Benzmac and other technicians who work on these cars from day to day. We arent weekend worriors , just professionals giving advice cause we see it everyday. We work on these cars 5 days a week and run into problems like this everyday. Listen to the pros. get a qualified technician to work on the tranny. Just my 2 cents

I do have a guy who's no "weekend worrior". He 's ASE certified for 20 years now. Been working on Mercedes, Porche, VW and American. He's stumped though. Can anyone give any suggestions besides getting a new tranny? Thanks

Well then you take it back to the qualified MB tranny mechanic who fixed it and have the work redone correctly on warranty.

Ok I cannot teach someone in one paragraph how to rebuild a tranny correctly. Now what you need to ask your technician is if he is over his head ?If so I would recommend another technician or a rebuilt unit. I dont have 20 years experience I only have 6 just on Mercedes. I can rebuild all Mercedes trannys though produced up to 2000. Like I said listen to the pros we are here to help.

As you have been told, this should not be difficult for someone that is experienced.
We would address your problem first by verifying governor pressure and then removing the valve body and applying the various components with air pressure. Internal leaks become apparant and proper application (experience matters) assures mechanical integrity. If both worked properly, we would look to the valve body and probably replace it with a used MB unit before we wasted too much time. They are usually less than $400 list price. The key in the last paragraph is that problems become greatest if the risk becomes too great. One could spend hours/days chasing a VB problem. The key from the shop/techs point of view is at what point does he go for the VB and what does he do with it if it isn't the problem. This becomes a real burden to someone who does one of these tarnnies every year or less.
