87 300E door locks

The door locks do not actuate from the key in the driver's door. They work from the trunk and passenger side. The locks work inside from pulling the stems everywhere.
Do I have a vacuum problem at the key? Do I pull the door panel or what?
Thanks.

I too am experiencing the same problem... works fine from the trunk, passenger side door, or by pulling the stems of any door except the driver's side. Often when I unlock the driver's door, the other locks will only raise once I close the driver's side door. Raising and lowering this lock manually does not work either.

Any thoughts out there?

Thanks,
Paul

Red face Pull the door panel...

and see what is going on. It does sound like a leak. Something may be disconnected.
Is your alarm working OK?

I'm having a similar problem on my '88 300e. On mine though, none of the locks will unlock all of the doors so I have to open each one manually. I'm not sure if my alarm works, but I'll check it.

I have a shop manual which shows the vacuum supply under the rear seat, so this weekend I will pull out the seat and see if the vacuum is turning on. If it isn't then I will check the electrical connections. If the supply does turn on, then I will assume that it's a leaky vacuum hose somewhere.

Anyway, if somebody has any other ideas I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Peter

door locks

I have an '83 Mercedee 240, and what I can say is that Mercedees is notorious for having vacuum seal leaks coming from where the seals are in the door locks. (they become brittle and let air in). so could be when you use the drivers side lock (which you have used the most), the seal is bad in that one.

If it is a vacuum problem and it is a diesel, eventualy you wouldn't be able to shut the car off. (or will start taking longer for it to shut off).

I usually tell people, the simple fix for THIS problem is to just plug the vacuum line located behind the firewall (next to the brake fluid container), you can just pull the vacuum line off and put a plastic bag over it with rubber band. (takes less than a minute to do). HOPE this helps for some of you.

Lightbulb door locks not working...

I've heard that this is a common problem. Look at the post (and the others that say they have the same problem) to see what the common denominator is... The door lock tumbler itself!
Which door you you lock / unlock more than any other (in the course of a month / year / lifetime of the car)? THE DRIVER'S DOOR!
I'm told that the tumbler actually wears such that the actuator for the vacuum locking mechanism does not engage (release) when you open the door. My mom's 86 W203 (190-E 2.3) is also displaying this problem. I recently moved so haven't had the time or facility in which to tear the door apart to replace the lock tumbler.
I'll bet that you find this to be the problem, NOT a vacuum line.
Donny, any comment?

The problem on my car was the tumbler wore out. I ordered a new one for $250-ouch! That is a "cheap"/25% off price-usu$310. My car only had 300,500 miles too.

I had that problem on my 190-2.6 and replaced the tumblers, it works fine now but now the only one that is not working is the trunk lock. does anyone know if this is caused by the same problem or something else?

lizem100 and Paul,

Sounds like you have a problem with the electrical switch in the driver key tumbler. Certainly true if the driver door locks and unlocks with the other locks.

Peter,

Sounds like you have a problem with the central lock vacuum/pressure pump or the vacuum/pressure lines at some central location.

Hi,

I just spoke to a MB tech who stated that on my '86 300E, the electrical connection on the tumblers only engage the alarm systems. He also said the driver and passenger door actuator for the vacuum system provides the electrical signal to the pump which in turn provides the pressure needed to activate all locks... locking or unlocking them.

If that's the case, I believe the $50 door actuator is what I need instead of a $200 tumbler.

Any disagreement out there??

Paul

Paul,

You're abosolutely right -- the switch is part of the actuator, not the key tumbler. My mistake.
